Amrita Pritam was born in 1919 in Gujranwala, Punjab, which is now part of Pakistan. She was the only child of a Sikh school teacher and a poet. She started writing poems at a young age and published her first collection at the age of 16. She was married to Pritam Singh, an editor and publisher, but later divorced him and had a long-term relationship with Imroz, a painter and writer.
Pritam witnessed the trauma and violence of the Partition, which inspired some of her most famous poems. She also became an active voice for women's rights and social justice, and supported various causes and movements. She received many accolades for her work, including the Padma Shri, the Padma Vibhushan, the Sahitya Akademi Award, the Bharatiya Jnanpith Award, and the Legion of Honour from France.
Pritam died in 2005 at the age of 86 in New Delhi. She was cremated as per her wishes at the Raj Ghat. She left behind a rich and diverse body of work that continues to inspire and challenge readers across the world. aa16f39245
